Global Warming Virtual March

Global warming is having a major impact upon all the species of animals of this planet, including frogs. With the melting of polar ice caps, polar bears have become threatened and penguins have had their feeding grounds disrupted. We must work to lower the greenhouse emissions that are having disasterous effects on our climate, as well as polluting our air and water. Please take a moment to join the virtual march against global warming (link is in right hand column).

Frog of the Day

With the 12th day over 90 degrees, I'm thinking about Christmas and cooler temperatures. And of course at Christmas time I'll be thinking about a nice warm summer, but that goes without saying!

This ornament is from the Robert Stanley Collection. It does not have a particular name. It dates to 2003 and could only be purchased exclusively at Hobby Lobby.

Annalee - 10" Leapin' Frog
Originally uploaded by KenCalvino.
In this hot, humid weather which is supposed to reach 100 degrees today, it's too hot to play leap frog!

This collectible is from Annalee and is a 10 inch Leapin' Frog. It dates to 1997 at a time when they were still made in New Hampshire (that's no longer the case - they are now made in China, which has infuriated a lot of collectors). Annalee dolls are a "soft sculptured art form." They are made of cloth and wire. Frogs have been popular with Annalee for a long time.

Frog of the Day

It may be hot here at Frog Central, but the music's hotter! Just listen to the music that the frogs play every night in your own yard.

This is the last of a trio of verdigras finish frogs. This one is playing the trumpet. I have no information as to the manufacturer of this piece. They are quite heavy and while they may be safe for outside, I tend to like them on my collectibles shelf inside.

It's turned hot here again at Frog Central, but I think it got a little hotter with these three!

This collectible is from Harmony Kingdom and is called Menage a Trois. It dates to 1998 and has since retired. Part of the fun of the Harmony Kingdom boxes is to see what's inside. The top lifts off to a deep box that has a tray with wine bottles, cheese, and a loaf of bread!

It's June which can only mean - Weddings!

This wonderful gem from Reuters:

KHOCHAKANDAR, India (Reuters) - Two giants toads were married in a traditional Hindu ceremony in eastern India at the weekend by villagers hoping to propitiate the rain gods and end a dry spell.

Some 400 people cheered and blew conches as women put streaks of vermilion on the female toad's head while a band played music and priests solemnized the marriage to the chanting of Hindu hymns.

The toads were picked up from separate ponds, dressed in bright red clothes and brought to the marriage venue in a decorated palanquin in Khochakandar village in West Bengal state late Sunday.

The married toads were released into a pond after the ceremony in the village about 365 km (225 miles) north of the state capital, Calcutta.

"Our forefathers used to organize marriages of toads to get sufficient rain for cultivation. We hope rain will be coming very soon," said Konica Mandal, one of the organizers of the wedding.

The village has been reeling under a severe heat wave with temperatures touching 44 degrees Celsius, drying up ponds and creating problems for farmers and their crops.

The southwest monsoon hit India's southern coast Sunday, about four days later than normal, but it will be some time before the rains wind their way to the rest of the country.

A heat wave sweeping India, Bangladesh and Nepal has killed nearly 100 people over the past two weeks.

Frog of the Day

Today is a very busy day here at Frog Central - and a very hot one! - so I'm getting around a bit early. It all just makes me want to sing and dance!

This plush is from DanDee and can sing and dance. It plays "Do You Love Me" while the head rocks back and forth. Although he has a pillow that says Prince Charming, by the looks of all the kisses I'd think he was fooling someone! I purchase this guy at K-Mart. It runs on 3AA batteries.

Remember, if you have a collectible that takes batteries to remove them when you are not using the item. The batteries can leak and ruin it.

Frog of the Day

2002 - it was a very good year. Wait, that's now how the song goes, is it?

This is a calendar from Firefly Books for the year 2002. The yearly calendars are great because they show some of the most spectacular frogs from around the world, but don't forget the little guys who hop around our lawns. They were really active here at Frog Central last night and it was great listening to them croaking well into the wee hours of the morning. Remember to put out some toad abodes and you too could have a nice chorus.

Cairn Studios - Turnabout
Originally uploaded by KenCalvino.
Today's collectible is one of the favorites of mine - but then I always did like to play leap frog!

This piece is from Cairn Studios and was a collaborative effort of both Tom Clark and Tim Wolfe. It is called Turnabout and is their inventory number 6317. This was created in November 1994 and is edition number 96. It is a retired piece. I was lucky enough to have this signed by both artists - Tom Clark's signature is visible in this picture, Tim Wolfe's is on the other side. I just love the Cairn Studio pieces and they are a good investment - their value increases dramatically after they retire.

From the card:
Here's a new turn on the old game of Leap Frog. The Woodspirit was a little nervous to have the frog leap over him, but turnabout is fair play, so her removed his hat and hunkered down. The frog got a running start - one, two, three, ribbet! and cleared the Woodspirit's balk pate with a flawless jump. Leaping lizards, this is fun! These two friends join the other leap frogging duos who find their game uplifting - Jumping Jack, Hopt Tuit and Leap Frog. This addition to the Kindred Spririt Collection has two coins: a play money token and, to celebrate this unique style of transportation, a New York City subway token. Together they make "fare play." If you are a kindred spirit with the little people and their animal neighbors, you'll be able to find three faces hidden in the Woodspirit's beard.

The token and play money are at the right foot of the Woodspirit. Some of the other duos that the tag talks about have already been featured here, the rest is yet to come. And while I hoped to be a kindred spirit with the little people and animal neighbors, I can only find two faces hidden in the Woodspirit's beard.
